Incorporating STEM Principles into Preschool Classrooms Using Hands-on Materials, Body Movement, & Technology

Presented by Dr. Ashley Lewis-Presser & Dr. Jessica Mercer-Young January 30, 2025 7PM EST

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL | 1 HOUR | LIVE ONLINE via ZOOM | INTERACTIVE

This webinar will help early childhood professionals understand data-related concepts and skills for preschoolers and how to engage in fun, hands-on activities that build existing mathematics skills. We will present hands-on and play-based investigations in which children answer authentic questions by collecting data, creating simple graphs, and interpreting the graphs. We will share a digital guide with lesson plans and professional learning videos to support implementation, along with a free digital app. A free digital app was designed for teachers to use with students on touch-screen tablets. The app itself guides teachers and children as they engage in these investigations that leverage their growing math skills (i.e. count, sort, classify) and build data science knowledge. However, the teachers can implement all of the investigations without using the app, should they prefer that approach.

Speakers' Biography

Dr. Ashley Lewis Presser’s work focuses primarily on research and development related to early childhood STEM. Her research focuses on the development and testing of early childhood STEM interventions and the appropriate use of technology in these settings. She is currently the PI for an NSF-funded project to design and test data collection and analysis activities for preK students (4-5-year-olds) that leverage hands-on materials and a digital tool that collects data and creates visual data displays. The goal is to build specific math skills that are naturally engaging for young children (e.g., counting and categorizing) and provide a foundation for later mathematics competencies.
Dr. Jessica Mercer Young has over 20 years of experience as a researcher and practitioner in early childhood education. A former preschool teacher, she is dedicated to providing equitable learning opportunities for all children, particularly for those from underrepresented populations. She has extensive expertise leading complex research studies that investigate the potential of interventions to promote effective teaching and learning for children from under-resourced communities, with a focus on mathematics, family math, and approaches to learning, including mastery motivation--persistence at challenging tasks—and growth mindset. She designs programs that attend to the mathematical and social-cognitive aspects of mathematics teaching and learning, that account for both the needs of young children learning mathematics and teachers teaching mathematics, with a particular emphasis on supporting teachers in enactment.
