In this webinar, we will review invisible disabilities (such as autism, Sensory Processing Disorder(SPD), Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and C-PTSD, etc.) for early childhood professionals who need to integrate students who may be struggling with these conditions, all of which can cause challenges to learning in classrooms. By combining background information about how SPD presents in classroom behaviors, practical tools for both students and teachers, and classroom strategies for building inclusive classroom communities, Joanie presents possibilities for more compassionate classrooms and schools. When we can recognize the sensory triggers, we can (ideally) circumvent the meltdowns. We can also teach our sensory students to be proactive about their own sensory systems and teach our other students to be supportive allies.

Speaker's Biography

Joanie Calem is a music educator, an autism parent, a singer/songwriter, a storyteller and an inclusion advocate. In Joanie’s ongoing music classroom work, she focuses on creating welcoming spaces that raise awareness of the beauty of individual uniqueness of all students. She believes that bullying disappears when difference is valued and appreciated. As an inclusion advocate, Joanie presents professional development workshops for educators and administrators on understanding and supporting individuals with Sensory Processing Disorder, ACES and other “non-apparent disabilities”.
 

Host's Biography

Dr. Scott Mesh is the Director of Young Child Learning and the CEO and Co-Founder of Los Niños Services which serves 2,000 young children with special needs each year through homecare and center services. He is a Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with young children and their families and is an expert on assessing young children for developmental disabilities and autism. He has helped thousands of parents over the years make the transition to gaining help for their children through early childhood special education services. He is a leader in early childhood development and working effectively with parents.

If you cancel within 30 days before the event, the registration fee is not refundable. However, you will receive a credit for the registration fee which can be applied to another Young Child Learning event within the following 12 months. The processing fee is non-refundable.

Young Child Learning will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants.
 
The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of Young Child Learning. All grievances must be submitted in writing (via e-mail or mail) within 7 days after purchase of the webinar. Any supporting documents must be included with the submitted complaint.
