The widespread adoption of smartphones and the rise of social media have added a new challenge to parenthood. The use of screens by children ages 0 to 5 continues to increase. According to Pew Research, a majority of parents with a young child say they are somewhat confident in knowing the appropriate amount of screen time for their child but being the first generation to parent with ever present access to digital media, they are also seeking out advice from others. As early childhood professionals, parents will likely have questions regarding screen usage. This webinar will discuss what research says about screens including recommendations by age, where to access high quality, educational, and age appropriate content, strategies on how to incorporate Media Literacy into discussions with young children, tips to offer parents for managing screen time, and a screen time planner to offer families as a way to stay on track.

This webinar is intended for Early Childhood teachers, therapists, and other professionals that work with young children.

Speaker's Biography

Kymberly Konty is an Early Literacy Outreach Associate at the Brooklyn Public Library, where she has been working in Youth and Family Services since 2018. With a Master's in Education from Bank Street College, Kymberly has specialized in literacy acquisition and community outreach. She actively leads programs and workshops such as Every Child Ready to Read and Early Literacy Review for Teachers, engaging with communities throughout Brooklyn. Kymberly also authored the Screen Time and Young Children workshop and regularly presents at early childhood centers, schools, community organizations, libraries, hospitals, and even prisons.
Her passion for literacy extends to her previous roles, including as an Early Childhood Program Assistant at Literacy, Inc., where she fostered relationships with daycares and conducted read-alouds. She has also contributed to curriculum development and teaching at several prominent schools, including Poly Prep Country Day School and The Berkeley Carroll School.
Kymberly is a member of the Screen Time Action Network as well as a nationwide media mentor librarian work group and continues to drive outreach initiatives in Brooklyn, being one of many helping to strengthen the foundation of all the borough’s young learners.

Host's Biography

Dr. Scott Mesh is the Director of Young Child Learning and the CEO and Co-Founder of Los Niños Services which serves 2,000 young children with special needs each year through homecare and center services. He is a Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with young children and their families and is an expert on assessing young children for developmental disabilities and autism.
